ABOUT THE HUMAN FOOT

Your feet, although not glamorous, are wonders of natural engineering. There are 26 bones, 33 joints, 20 muscles and over 100 ligaments in each foot. They are all designed to interact with one another to provide you with the ability to walk or run over 115,000 miles in your lifetime. Unfortunately, today's lifestyles often place excessive or unusual demands on your feet. Shoe gear, athletic activity and working conditions often aggravate certain conditions, and make what should be normal, painless activity an ordeal to be faced on a daily basis. The results of these excessive demands mean that four out of five adults will at some time complain of foot health problems. In order to stay mobile, professional care of your feet is a true necessity. Podiatric foot care is especially important for people who suffer from diabetes, vascular disease, heart disease, arthritis, new or old injuries, or long-term untreated conditions of the lower leg, ankle or foot.

"Man's foot is all his own. It is unlike any other foot. It is the most distinctly human part of the whole of his anatomical make-up. It is a human specialization and whether he be proud of it or not, it is his hallmark, and so long as Man has been Man, and so long as he remains Man, it is by his feet he will be known from all other members of the animal kingdom"

  • The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates once claimed, "When our feet hurt, we hurt all over".

FOOT & ANKLE FACTS

  • Podiatrists are the foremost authorities and medical specialist of the foot, ankle and lower leg.
  • Podiatrists provide 39% of all care to the lower extremity.
  • Podiatrist can often provide non-surgical care for many common complaints by use of high tech, cutting edge therapies not utilized by other providers.
  • Foot and ankle pain is never normal
  • About 20% of the US population has an average of 1.4 foot problems each year
  • About 60% of all foot and ankle injuries were sprains and strains of the ankle
  • Podiatric Surgeons are specially trained to diagnose and treat acute, chronic and traumatic conditions of the foot, ankle and lower leg
  • Podiatric Surgeons perform over 83% of all surgeries done to the digits, feet and ankles...
  • Seventy-five percent of Americans will experience foot health problems of varying degrees of severity at one time or another in their lives.
  • The 52 bones in your feet make up about one quarter of all the bones in your body.
  • Women have about four times as many foot problems as men; lifelong patterns of wearing high heels often are the culprit.
  • There are times when you're walking that the pressure on your feet exceeds your body weight, and when you're running, it can be three or four times your weight.
  • Shopping for shoes is best done in the afternoon, as said by the American Podiatric Medical Association. Your feet tend to swell a little during the day, and it's best to buy shoes to fit them then. Have your feet measured every time you purchase shoes, and do it while you're standing. When you try on shoes, try them on both feet; many people have one foot larger than the other, and it's best to fit the larger one.
  • Walking is the best exercise for your feet. It also contributes to your general health by improving circulation, contributing to weight control and promoting all-around well-being.
  • Your feet mirror your general health. Such conditions as arthritis, diabetes, nerve and circulatory disorders can show their initial symptoms in the feet -- foot ailments can be your first sign of more serious medical problems.
  • Only a small percentage of the population is born with foot problems, the American Podiatric Medical Association believes. Its neglect and a lack of awareness of proper care -- including ill-fitting shoes -- those bring on the problems. A lifetime of wear and tear, plus neglect, accounts for the fact that the practices of most Podiatrist are made up of older Americans.
  • Corns and calluses are caused by friction and pressure from skin rubbing against bony areas when wearing shoes. If the first signs of soreness are ignored, corns and calluses rise up as nature's way of protecting sensitive areas.
  • There are approximately 250,000 sweat glands in a pair of feet, and they excrete as much as half a pint of moisture each day.
  • Podiatric physicians are four times less likely to use costly inpatient services than other physicians.
